Exam locations – Spring 2019 Maps of campus and University buildings Distance examinations Students at the University of Iceland can apply for permission to take their examinations abroad, for instance due to a stay abroad. Students must themselves obtain an appropriate examination site and supervisor/invigilator. The examination should take place at a university or embassy/consulate. Furthermore, both distance students and on-site students at UI can apply for permission to take their examinations off-campus, within Iceland. A fee of ISK 3,000 is due if the distance examination takes place within Iceland, while a fee of ISK 5,000 is required for examinations taken abroad. If a student takes more than one distance examination within the same examination period, the full fee is charged for the first examination but half a fee for subsequent ones. Please note: No examination fees apply in regular distance studies organised by the University of Iceland. All students requesting distance examinations, both on-site and distance students, must fill in an online form in Ugla: Distance examinations – Sites and courses. UI students who wish to take their examinations abroad also need to submit this form: Application for Distance Examination. Students from universities abroad can apply for permission to sit their examinations at the University of Iceland. This must be done with the full approval of the home institution in each case. External Application for Distance Examination. When examinations are held outside of the general examination periods, i.e. 2 – 18 December and 25 April – 10 May, UI students can apply for distance examinations using a specific form: Application for distance examination outside of regular period. Further information and all necessary steps are detailed on the online application forms linked above. Examination rules During examinations specific rules apply regarding communication, identification documents, aids, etc. The following instructions are printed on the inside cover of the examination answer books: PLEASE NOTE! The examination table should be empty except for the examination materials, student’s ID, writing instruments and the aids authorised in each case. A student who has mistakenly brought any unauthorised aids into the examination room must immediately hand these to the proctors. Students must not remove any examination materials. This applies to all materials, including scratch paper. Use of communication devices is not permitted during examinations. Students must turn off their mobile phones and leave them in their outerwear or bags in the storage area of each room, or hand them to the proctors (invigilators) for safekeeping while the examination is in progress. Pencil cases shall be kept on the floor, under the examination table. Students shall have their photo ID readily available for the proctors. (Proctors will check IDs and fill in an attendance roster.) Students are not permitted to leave the examination room during the first third part of the examination time. Any communication with other examination candidates or persons outside the examination venue is forbidden during the examination. Please inform the proctors if you witness other students breaking these rules. Consumption of tobacco or food is not permitted during an examination. Examination candidates shall leave the examination venue as soon as they have completed their examination. Violations of these rules are subject to expulsion from the examination or the course, as appropriate, as well as sanctions provided for in current legislation and regulations for the University of Iceland. Further examination provisions are found in the Rules for the University of Iceland. For example, Article 58 addresses examination procedures and rules: "The University Director of Examinations shall handle the preparation and direction of examinations in consultation with the administrative staff of schools and faculties. Students taking examinations may not assist other examinees in completing the examination paper or seek help from others in so doing. Nor may a registered student, who is not taking an examination, provide such assistance. Persons taking examinations may not speak to one another, nor may they bring books, materials or equipment with them other than those authorised by the instructor(s), unless otherwise specifically provided for in the faculty rules. The same shall apply to other assignment work by students unless otherwise decided by the instructor. A violation of the provisions of this and other examination rules, adopted by the Council, shall be liable to expulsion from the examination hall and, as the case may be, sanctions as provided for in Article 19 of the Act on Public Higher Education Institutions, no. 85/2008. Students shall mark their examination papers with an examination number, allocated to each student by the student registry, and the grades published using the same identification. Faculties may, however, set rules for the exemption from this principle. The University Council shall adopt detailed rules on examination supervision and implementation of examinations." Organisation of exams Faculties are responsible for teaching and exams. Teachers are responsible for exams, but each faculty determines how examinations are arranged, in so far as there are not binding provisions in legislation or University Council regulations. The duration of a written exam is generally three hours. The Director of Examinations is responsible for the preparation and administration of exams, in association with schools and faculties. About examination schedules and exam locations The examination schedules are published by the end of September for the autumn semester, and by the end of January for the spring semester. The examination schedule for makeup exams, held after the conclusion of the general examination periods in December and May, is published as soon as possible, i.e. as soon as registration information is available. Information on examination locations during the examination periods is posted in the Examination Schedules section above. Students are assigned specific numbered seats in the examination rooms.
