Applications for Exchange Studies

The application deadline is 1 February each year (or the next business day if the application deadline is on a public holiday). It is advisable to apply before this deadline, even for spring semester exchange, because of higher availability of spaces and grants. An additional deadline for available spaces in the spring semester is 12 September each year. Applications are submitted electronically along with a transcript of records with ranking, which is available at the Service Desk, University Centre (Háskólatorg). The transcript is uploaded in the online application. The International Office processes applications and nominates students to host universities. After that, students are asked to provide a Learning Agreement where they select courses at the host university and get approval from their faculty.

Students planning on an exchange need to find a potential host university in the Partner University Database and make sure that appropriate courses are available there before completing the application. Students planning on exchange in the USA, Canada, Australia and elsewhere where English language requirements are made, have to look into whether they need to provide results from a standardized English language exam (such as TOEFL).

Students need to complete the annual registration and remain registered at the University of Iceland during the exchange. Students need to register for full time 30 ECTS credits per semester while on exchange and get their studies transferred back to UI partially or in full.
