International Programmes

Even though the primary language of instruction is Icelandic, the University of Iceland offers several study programmes that are taught fully in English and are therefore open to international students. In addition, the University offers several foreign language programmes in languages other than English. Please note that proof of English proficiency requirements may apply to international applicants whose native language is not English.

All applicants must apply for one of the study programmes on offer and then select courses accordingly. It is not possible to apply for individual courses.

Among the varied programmes offered at the University of Iceland the following are the ones particularly suited for international students:

It takes three (180 ECTS) or four years (240 ECTS) of full-time study to complete undergraduate programmes. Degree programmes can have one Major (180 or 240 ECTS), two Majors (120 + 120 ECTS) or a Major and Minor (120 + 60 ECTS). Diplomas can be shorter.

Postgraduate diplomas are usually 30 or 60 ECTS, while Master's degree programmes are either 90 or 120 ECTS.

Doctoral degree programmes are at least 180 ECTS.

International students can complete a BA degree in Icelandic as a Second Language to acquire the basic knowledge and theoretical skills to continue academic studies in Icelandic.

Another possibility is the Practical Diploma in Icelandic as a Second Language, a practical language programme for beginners, which focuses on developing skills in speaking, writing and understanding modern Icelandic.

The University offers several foreign language programmes.

Further information on each programme may be found below and in the course catalogue.
