Studies in Icelandic as a second language are an excellent choice for students who want to improve their practical and/or academic skills in Icelandic. Two separate programmes are offered: the BA programme and the Practical Diploma programme.

Deadline for applications

Icelandic as a Second Language only accepts new students for the Fall semester of each academic year. The application deadline is February 1.

For Residents with "kennitala"

Through the communication portal, students with an Icelandic personal ID number (kennitala) can also apply for the BA programme from March 1 to May 20, and from March 1 to June 5 for the Practical DiplomaThe Admission Test for the BA programme takes place at 12:00 on June 10.

Admission requirements

Undergraduate studies

Foreign equivalent to the Icelandic matriculation examination. Further information can be found in article 17, regulation on admission requirements for undergraduate study no. 331/2022. All applicants must also pass a special entrance examination in Icelandic. This examination is based on the level of Icelandic in Icelandic Online 1 and Icelandic Online 2, self-taught courses available free online (http://icelandiconline.com).
