PhD Studies

The Faculty of Political Science offers two doctorate programmes; Gender Studies and Political Science. Both programmes are designed as full time studies for three academic years.

Admission Requirements

As a requirement for admission students should have a MA degree from the School of Social Sciences, University of Iceland, with first class grades, or an equivalent qualification. The process of selection for admission also relies on whether the necessary expertise in the research area in question is available at the Faculty.

Programme requirements

A Ph.D. thesis carries the weight of 180 ECTS credits. In addition to that 30 ECTS have to be completed in courses. Candidates may also be required to take up to 60 ECTS credits in courses if it is considered necessary to enhance the student's knowledge in the field of his/her research project. 210 ECTS credits have to be completed for the qualification.
