Join us for the Reykjavík's edition of IUPAC's Global Women's Breakfast (GWB) 2023

This year’s GWB theme is "Breaking Barriers in Science". The Global Breakfast is designed to support the United Nations Day of Women and Girls in Science. In 2023, the GWB will also be a key part of the Celebration of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.

On behalf of GWB, we invite you all for a digital seminar open to all, as well as a physical breakfast at the University of Iceland. Our seminar will consist of a guest lecture by Associate Professor Melina Duarte from the Department of Philosophy at UiT The Arctic University of Norway (streamed live from Norway). After the lecture, questions from the chat will be answered before we shut down the digital part of the event. Later, the local discussions will be followed at the University of Iceland with invited guests.

Speaker:
Dr. Melina Duarte, Associate Professor, Department of Philosophy at UiT The Arctic University of Norway

Title of the lecture:
Making sense of "Diversity" in the Nordic Academia

Abstract:
Diversity is an abstract concept that can denote any type of variation or difference. Despite its open and ample appeal, diversity is supposed to guide the inclusion politics in academia in tangible ways. For this to happen, however, this abstract concept requires contextual instantiation of some kind. In the Global Women’s Breakfast 2023, we will explore ways in which the meaning of “diversity” can be negotiated in the Nordic Academia and resonate with the following conceptual, justificatory, and normative challenges: What is diversity? Is diversity important? If, yes, how can we best promote it in the Nordic Academia?

Invited guests for local discussions:
Prof. Ásdís Helgadóttir, Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Iceland
Prof. Ebba Þóra Hvannberg, Faculty of Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Iceland
