Welcome to our new international students

Welcome to our new international students  - Available at University of Iceland

Over 800 international students are due to begin their studies at the University of Iceland this autumn. Almost a third of them are exchange students visiting for one or two semesters on the basis of partnership agreements between UI and other institutions, but the group also includes just over 500 degree students. There are currently around 1,600 international students hailing from more than 100 different countries studying at the University.

Orientation days on campus

Orientation days for new international students will take place 25-26 August. Due to the pandemic, orientation days have been mainly online these past two years, so it is wonderful to be able to welcome new international students with on-campus events once more.

The programme includes various courses, school welcome meetings, guided tours around campus, and events with live music and grilled hot dogs. The Student Council has also organised karaoke and pub quiz events as well as live gigs in the Student Cellar.

New students will be able to take a course called The Keys to Success at the University of Iceland, organised by the UI Student Counselling and Career Centre, which will provide pointers on how to succeed in their studies at the University and enjoy their stay in Iceland. Students can also sign up for a crash course in the language called Icelandic in 90 minutes. The National and University Library will be running sessions introducing students to the library and available services.

Barbecue and DJ

On Thursday 25 August, new students are invited to a reception in the University Centre. There will be addresses from Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of UI; Friðrika Harðardóttir, director of the International Division; and Rebekka Karlsdóttir, president of the Student Council. Following the speeches will be a barbecue with music from DJ KARITAS. The fun will continue into the evening in the Student Cellar.

The aim of orientation is to give new students the chance to meet other students, learn about available support services, and start adjusting to a new culture.

Visit the information portal on the University website to find out about this year's events and all the main services available.
