The University of Iceland is for the eighth year running on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings list over the best universities worldwide, now ranked in place 250-300. A new list for 2018-2019 was published this week. The University, furthermore, ranks in place 19  on the list of best universities in the Nordic countries.

The University of Iceland has had a place on the list since its centennial in 2011 and has ever since been ranked among the 300 best universities in the world. Times Higher Education’s evaluation of 1,250 international universities covers numerous operational factors in the universities, including research activity, international impact, teaching, and study environment.

"It is a great pleasure to see the University of Iceland among the 300 best universities in the world as it has been for the last several years. This has been achieved through the dedication and ceaseless efforts of both our staff and students. It is vital for Icelanders to have a comprehensive university that is ranked among the best in the world. Future opportunities lie in both the extent of interdisciplinary possibilities within the university and the depth in our research," says Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, about the success.

The Times Higher Education list is one of the most prestigious and influential evaluations of the world's best universities.  The other is the so-called Shanghai list, which the University of Iceland made for the first time in 2017. The University of Iceland is, according to this year's list, the seventh-best university in the field of remote sensing; which involves, for example, taking digital images from planes and satellites and using these to extract data regarding the Earth's surface. The University is ranked in 76-100 place in the field of earth sciences and in 101-150 place in the fields of bioscience, geography, and nursing, in 151-200 place in tourism studies, 201 - 200 place in public health sciences and clinical medicine, and seat 301-400 place among the best universities worldwide in human biological sciences and political sciences.

"We must continue on the same path. Our amazing scientific results have been noted in an international context in recent years. The University Schools have, furthermore, been placed high on the Times Higher list. Even though this is an excellent result that the University staff can be proud of, we must consider that our international peer universities are constantly progressing. We must not lag behind but rather advance in every field.  Society's investment in education in an investment in the future," the Rector adds.

The University's position on the Times Higher Education list has provided numerous opportunities for collaboration with international science institutions in recent years, and this reflects the University's strength as a versatile international research university.
The list and the basis of the evaluation can be found on the Times Higher Education website.
