The University of Iceland is ranked amongst the best universities worldwide on 14 lists in academic subjects according to the prestigious Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects for 2021 published yesterday. The University holds its place among the very best in remote sensing and is among the top 45 in the field of electrical and computer engineering. The University of Iceland remains the only Icelandic university to make the list.

ShanghaiRanking Consultancy has published a list of academic ranking in individual fields of study for a number of years now in addition to their assessment on the overall success of a university in a global context; or the ShanghaiRanking. The assessment is based on six objective indicators, including the number of articles published in renowned scientific journals, the number of times research conducted at the university has been cited by other research scientists, the university's performance based on the number of employees as well as the number of employees receiving scientific awards for their contributions to individual fields of study.

This year’s evaluation by the ShanghaiRanking Consultancy includes 50 academic subjects in 4,000 universities worldwide; whereof 1,800 universities made the list. 
 

The University of Iceland was ranked 7th best in the world for remote sensing, but it has been placed among the top ten in the field since its first publication in 2017.

Remote sensing involves, for example, taking digital images from planes and satellites and using these to extract data regarding the Earth's surface. 

The University is, furthermore, ranked number 45 in the field of electrical and computer engineering and among the top 75 universities in the world in nursing. The University was also ranked among the top 150 for earth sciences, 151-200 in biological sciences, and 200-300 for tourism studies, public health sciences, geography, human biology, and political science, and among the top 400 in atmospheric science. Furthermore, the University's performance earned it a place among the top 500 in psychology, clinical medicine, and ecology.

The ShanghaiRanking is one of two most prestigious and influential rankings regarding the world's best academic institutions, the other being the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. The University of Iceland has been placed on the latter for almost a decade.
