Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, sent the following message to University staff and students today (17 September 2020):
"Dear students and colleagues,
First of all, I would like to thank you for how well you have responded to deCODE genetics' generous offer to screen for COVID-19. Around 450 people were tested yesterday at Smáratorg 3 in Kópavogur, including a large number of staff and students from the University of Iceland. One infection was confirmed, but is not believed to be connected to the University.
Students and staff may also be tested free of charge today and tomorrow. I urge those of you who have not yet taken part in the screening tests to book an appointment here. The invitation code is HI_COVID
I would like to stress again that screening is not intended for people who are in quarantine, nor for people experiencing symptoms. The initiative is also only for those who have been on the University campus in the last 10 days.
When the screening is complete, we will be able to start mapping the spread of infections here at the University of Iceland. It is important that as many people as possible get tested and I would like to encourage students in particular to take this opportunity. Those who have been infected at the University work in a range of different buildings and are therefore not directly connected. For this reason, it is vital that we gather more data in order to effectively manage the outbreak.
Under these circumstances, many people, students and teaching staff alike, are not sure whether it is safe to come to the University. The general rule is that University of Iceland buildings are open, but online teaching is generally available for anyone who wants that option. This applies to both students and teaching staff.
Social activities are a very important part of the student experience at the University of Iceland. Unfortunately, this aspect of student life must wait due to the challenges we are currently facing. I strongly urge student organisations to postpone all social events for the time being. Let us remember that this situation is temporary and that we will have both opportunity and cause for celebration once it is over.
We must also remember that hand washing and other steps we can take as individuals are our best defence against infection. Follow official public health guidelines. Stay at home if you notice even the mildest symptoms. Download the contact tracing app.
Be responsible and adopt a solution orientated attitude.
I wish you all the best, dear students and colleagues.
Jón Atli Benediktsson,
Rector"
