Announcement for the rector to University students and staff 23 March 2020:
"Dear students and staff,
The University of Iceland Emergency Response Board met this morning (23 March 2020) to discuss matters relating to COVID-19.
Following the meeting of the UI Emergency Response Board and because of the resolution of the University Council on Friday, concerning changes to the arrangements for assessment and examinations due to COVID-19, I met this morning with the most senior administrators of the University, to expand on the resolution as follows:
- Examinations will not be held on University of Iceland premises this semester. In accordance with the decision of the University Council on 20 March, arrangements for examinations and assessment will instead be determined by schools and faculties in consultation with the Division of Academic Affairs.
- There are various alternatives available for teaching staff and faculties to replace traditional exams on University premises. Course coordinators, in consultation with schools and faculties, will endeavour to announce changes to the implementation of exams and assessment before the weekend and by 30 March at the latest. University administrators urge schools, faculties and teaching staff to take into consideration the challenging circumstances in which we find ourselves and to ease the pressure on students regarding assessment, where possible.
- The goal is to ensure that students are able to complete their courses for the spring semester 2020, as well as courses from the autumn semester 2019 with make-up and resit exams on the publicised exam timetable. Student representatives will be consulted on changes to the implementation of exams and assessment as far as possible.
We remind you that general information is available on the University of Iceland's COVID-19 web page. We also remind students of the available web chat services.
Staff are asked to report quarantine or infection to their manager. Students are kindly asked to report these things to their faculty. Schools will then pass the information on to the Emergency Response Board at neydarstjorn@hi.is.
Let's all take care and respect the government's instructions on hygiene and disease prevention. Civil defence is in our hands.
Best regards,
Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector / President"
