The GEST Programme and RIKK – Institute for Gender, Equality and Difference Lecture Series in spring 2020 is devoted to gender and climate change. The lecture series is held in partnership with the National Museum of Iceland. The lectures take place at noon, usually on Thursdays, in the Museum’s Lecture Hall, and are conducted in either English or Icelandic.
The series opened last Thursday, 23 January, when Ole Martin Sandberg, Ph.D. candidate in Philosophy at the University of Iceland, gave a lecture entitled “Climate Crisis and ‘the Logic of Masculinist Protection.’” Hólmfríður Garðarsdóttir, professor of Spanish at the University of Iceland, is the second speaker with a lecture on feminist environmentalism in Latin America. The third lecture, is by Auður H. Ingólfsdóttir, international political scientist, who will discuss “Climate Change, Gender Equality and Development Cooperation.” Mukul Mangalik, professor of History at Delhi University in India and lecturer at GEST, will give a lecture about the Chipko Movement in India.
Auður Aðalsteinsdóttir, editor at University of Iceland Press, will talk about Icelandic author Gyrðir Elíasson. Arnfríður Guðmundsdóttir, professor of Systematic Theology, will give her talk, about responses of feminist theology to the impending climate catastrophe. Joni Seager, professor of Global Studies at Bentley University in USA and lecturer at GEST, will give a lecture on “Petro-Bromance: Masculinities and Fossil Fuels.” Gunnhildur Lily Magnúsdóttir, associate professor in Political Science at Malmö University in Sweden, will give the final talk of the series on 7 May entitled “Intersectionality and Climate Policy Making: Ways Forward to a Socially Inclusive Climate Politics.”
