Article 1.  Scope.

The Regulation on doctoral study and doctoral degrees at the University of Iceland School of Health Sciences is established in consideration of the Criteria and requirements for the quality of doctoral studies at the University of Iceland and the Regulation for the University of Iceland, no. 569/2009. The School of Health Sciences Regulation on doctoral study and doctoral degrees forms the framework for rules at the School’s faculties.

Doctoral defence: Katrín Ólafsdóttir

On Friday, November 25th, a doctoral defense will be held at the Department of Education and Diversity, University of Iceland. Katrín Ólafsdóttir defends her doctoral thesis in educational sciences:

Gendered and Structural Violence: The discourse on intimate partner violence in Iceland: Structural problems and the development of the self

Opponents are dr. Professor Lisa Lazard at the Open University in London and dr. Eyja Margrét Jóhännu Brynjarsdóttir, professor at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Iceland.

The main supervisor was dr. Jón Ingvar Kjaran, professor at the University of Iceland's Faculty of Education and co-supervisor dr. Annadís Greta Rúdólfsdóttir docent at the Faculty of Education, University of Iceland.

In addition to them, the doctoral committee included Dr. Jeff Hearn Professor Emeritus at the Hanken School of Economics in Finland.

How are newly qualified female teachers doing in their jobs?

"There are concerns in our society about the numbers of women leaving the teaching profession, including the fact that many young teachers do not last long in the job. Sometimes the discussion focuses more on worries about getting more men into teaching, but the fact is that when there are vacant teaching positions, gender and age don't really matter – the only thing that matters is whether you are able to work with the children and teenagers who need a teacher," says Ingólfur Ásgeir Jóhannesson, professor at the Faculty of Education and Diversity. Along with his colleagues, he is currently investigating how newly qualified female teachers manage during their first two years as compulsory school teachers and to what extent their experiences in compulsory schools are related to preconceptions about sex and gender roles.

Some say that the success of scientists is based on their eagerness to reveal that which no one has ever seen before. This eagerness has proven fruitful as science has had an enormous effect on our reality.   It suffices to look at the mobile phone and computer to appreciate what science can achieve, but also simply the toaster and the washing machine. However, none of this sparks anything in Gavin Lucas' search of what he wants to show us, his contemporaries - for he is an archaeologist. 

Nonetheless, Gavin works every day in satisfying his curiosity as he wants to open a window into the past and show us what is there. "Research is just education by another name," says Gavin and smiles as he stands in the middle of a heap of dirt in the city. In an archaeological excavation in Seltjarnarnes to be exact; where once stood simple cottages by the sea. "Without science we would be lost."
