Important to study the women who paved the way

18/03/2021 - 15:47

Arnfríður Guðmundsdóttir, professor of theology at the University of Iceland, has her windows open into the past these days as she is peering into the life of a woman who was the first Icelandic female University graduate, not only from one line of study; but two.

The woman Arnfríður's study focuses on is Steinunn Jóhannesdóttir, later Hayes (1870-1960).  She completed her university studies in both theology and medicine almost 120 years ago. Steinunn moved to the United States towards the end of the nineteenth century where she got a university education.  After that she moved with her husband to China where she worked as a medical missionary doctor for four decades.

"The spark for the study lies in an interest to search for the missing women in Icelandic history, especially those connected with the history of the church and Christianity in an Icelandic context," says Arnfríður.

Overwhelming response to educational material on COVID-19 for children

30/03/2020 - 16:34

Scientists and students at the University of Iceland have been contributing in various ways during this enormous social upheaval caused by the COVID-19 epidemic and the recent assembly ban in Iceland. Among them is Guðlaug Marion Mitchinson, a PhD student in psychology at the University of Iceland, who has used her specialist knowledge to translate and adapt educational material about the virus for children. The material has spread through the community like the virus itself and has attracted significant attention from the media.

The threat of Climate change not convincing enough

29/09/2015 - 08:00

To get the public behind actions to alleviate the impact of climate change, it might be a reasonable approach to point out added benefits of behaviour change. Pointing out the extent of the problem does not suffice to convince people on the necessity of action. These are the findings of a multinational team of environmental- and social psychologists published today in the prestigious academic journal Nature: Climate Change.

Children of multicultural ethnicity often perpetrators or victims of bullying

Children of multicultural ethnicity are less likely to experience positive connections with their friends and acquaintances than children born in Iceland. Furthermore, they have more difficulties in finding domestic friends, even when they have mastered the new language. At the same time it has been acknowledged that friends can play a key role in the lives of this group when parents have meagre means to support their children when moving between countries,” says Eyrún María Rúnarsdóttir, Sessional Teacher at the Faculty of Education Studies. She is a doctoral student at the Leiden University in the Netherlands but gathers data for her research entirely in Iceland.

Gendered love

“It seems that we avoid writing about or discussing love, regardless whether it is in connection with science or a casual chat around the kitchen table,“ says Halldóra Gunnarsdóttir, MA in Gender Studies, with a smile on her face during the presentation of her MA thesis “Gendered love – do women and men love in a different manner?” She stands in podium and discusses love, which she finds utterly fascinating. Gunnarsdóttir talks about having been in love frequently; but most of all with her husband, she adds with a big smile. In front of her sits a large audience of interested individuals who have no doubt also been in love. The research topic concerns everyone, both young and old.
