Do students from outside the European Union have to pay tuition in the program?
No, there is no tuition fee in the Viking and Medieval Norse Studies; this applies to all our students, regardless of nationality. There is only an annual registration fee of ISK 75,000 (approximately 530 EUR or 600 USD depending on the exchange rate). More on fees.
Are there any scholarships available in Viking and Medieval Norse Studies?
Unfortunately, the University of Iceland does not offer any scholarships (but then it does not charge any tuition). Most of our students support themselves from student loans or scholarships from their home country or their own personal savings.
What is the cost of living in Iceland?

Is student housing available?
Yes, there is student housing on campus, but availability is limited. Some of our students live in student housing on campus, but many live off campus in rented rooms or shared apartments.
In the entry requirements, it is stated that applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree with “a medieval component”. What does that mean?
The medieval component refers to one or more successfully completed university courses on some aspect of the Middle Ages, including (but not limited to) medieval literature, medieval history, medieval art, medieval philosophy, or medieval archaeology.
Do I need to have a major in Medieval Studies to be eligible for the Viking and Medieval Norse Studies program?
No, a full degree, a major or a minor specifically in Medieval Studies is not required. Some background in medieval studies is necessary, however. Such a background could consist of one or more university courses on some aspect of the Middle Ages, including (but not limited to) medieval literature, medieval history, medieval art, medieval philosophy, or medieval archaeology. How do I prepare for the program?
If you are thinking about applying, you should check out the Preparatory Reading List. It is divided into Required Preparatory Readings, which incoming students are expected to have completed before starting the programme, and Recommended Additional Readings. In short: Try to read as much as you can!
I hope to get my Bachelor's degree in June. Can I still apply by February 1st?
Yes, you can. Applicants receiving their Bachelor’s degree in the spring or summer after the application deadline of February 1st should submit transcripts documenting their undergraduate career up to that point as part of their application. Successful applicants will be asked to submit their final diploma before enrolment in the autumn.
