Our programme covers roughly a millennium of archaeology in the North, from the Vikings to VE Day. From Norse boat burials to WWII camps, you will explore the materialities and mentalities that shaped the world we live in today. Unlike other historical archaeology programs, we don’t divide history into the medieval, post-medieval and contemporary but focus on the long-term; our program traverses the medieval to modern, looking at continuities and discontinuities with a special emphasis on Northern Europe and the North Atlantic. In your studies, you will learn how to investigate both written sources and material culture, understanding the ways they work together and in tension to produce a richer and deeper appreciation of our past.
