General parking charges at the University of Iceland will commence next semester

The University of Iceland has taken the first step towards improving traffic and the environment on campus by implementing registration and fees for vehicles using the university's parking spaces. These changes will come into effect on 1 September 2024. Fee collection will be moderate.

A general fee will be charged for the use of parking spaces from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on weekdays. Parking spaces will be divided into two charging zones:

• Zone P2 will consist of spaces closest to buildings where charges will always be applied, similar to those in Skeifan by the Main Building and at Gimli. The number of these spaces will be increased to around 200 out of approximately 1,700 parking spaces on the university campus. These areas are marked in red on the accompanying map.
• Other spaces will be in the P3 charging category, where a general fee will also be charged, however, students and staff can register their vehicles to park there without any additional fee other than a modest registration fee. These parking spaces are marked in blue on the map. Vehicles can be deregistered at any time, and cancellation takes effect from the following month.

Those with parking permits for disabled people will still be allowed to park in designated parking spaces without a separate payment according to current traffic laws.

Close consultation has been conducted with Landspítali University Hospital and other neighboring institutions in preparing the implementation of these changes, ensuring that students and staff in the health sector, who have business on both the University of Iceland and Landspítalinn premises, do not pay double fees under charging category P3.

This project is the University of Iceland's first step in encouraging people to travel to and from the campus in an environmentally friendly manner, contributing positively to safer and more environmentally friendly traffic at the University of Iceland.

Furthermore, the university has taken measures towards developing sustainable transportation methods, such as the construction of bicycle shelters and other facilities for cyclists. Then it is estimated that the first line of the City Line (Borgarlína) will run through the university area and will be put into operation within a few years.

Parking enforcement and monitoring services will be outsourced in the coming weeks.
