Leading Journal in Feminist Studies Edited by UI Researchers
Researchers at the University of Iceland have taken over the editorial management of the NORA journal, Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender Research. The journal, published in English by Taylor & Francis, aims to convey a Nordic perspective on international gender studies and feminism, making Nordic research in the field accessible and visible on the global stage. NORA, with its significant impact, is a leading publication in Nordic feminist studies. It is also an important source for trends and developments in the field and collaboration with other research areas. The journal features new studies from various disciplines, including education, health sciences, history, law, literature, philosophy, political science, theology, sociology, and science and technology. NORA serves as a platform for interdisciplinary articles, opinion articles, and reviews that address both international and specific Nordic subjects, methods, and theories.
NORA is published four times per year and is committed to situating and mapping Nordic feminist and gender research today, and to promoting transnational and transdisciplinary dialogue. Contributions to NORA should be accessible to a diverse readership of interested academic readers. Authors are encouraged to explain discipline-specific terms and methodologies and may show how their findings have relevance for gender researchers in other disciplines. The articles in NORA are also relevant for policy makers, equality consultants, cultural workers and social activists who seek insights into gendered and intersecting inequality, relations of power within and across state, family, work, civil society and fields of culture in Nordic societies.
NORA was established in 1993 as a “new voice in international women’s studies” and, thus, turns thirty this year. The name for the journal was chosen as a tribute to the female protagonist in Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll house. The editorial office moves between Nordic universities/countries every second year and is currently in Iceland for the first time.
The editorial team is from the University of Iceland, consisting of Brynja Elísabeth Halldórsdóttir, Eyja Margrét Brynjarsdóttir, and Irma Erlingsdóttir. Brynja is an associate professor at the School of Education, while Eyja Margrét and Irma are professors at the School of Humanities. Apart from co-managing the editorial responsibilities for the journal, Irma Erlingsdóttir serves as the chair of the Nordic network overseeing its operations, making her the first Icelander to hold this position. In addition to publishing the journal, the network organizes major international conferences; its 2019 the conference was organised by the Institute of Gender Studies at the University of Iceland (RIKK). The last conference took place in Norway in 2022 and the next one will be held in Sweden in two years. The journal's strong position in the international context reflects the interest in Nordic feminist studies and gender studies.
