Doctoral defence in School of Education: Ívar Rafn Jónsson

Friday, May 13 2022 an oral defence in Educational Science from the Faculty of Education and Pedagogy, University of Iceland will take place. Ívar Rafn Jónsson will defend his PhD thesis: Assessment culture matters: Teachers’ and students’ perceptions of assessment and feedback. 

Opponents are dr. Christopher DeLuca, professor at Queen's University and dr. Mary Hill, associate professor at the University of Auckland.   

Main supervisor was dr. Kari Smith professor at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and co-supervisor dr. Guðrún Geirsdóttir associate professor at the School of Education, University of Iceland. 

Expert in the doctoral committee was Dr. Ingvar Sigurgeirsson, professor emeritus, University of Iceland.  

Dr. Karen Rut Gísladóttir, professor, will conduct the ceremony.

About the PhD project: 

The aim of the research is to gain a deeper understanding of how teachers' and students' perception of assessment and feedback is shaped by different assessment cultures. The research was conducted in three upper secondary schools in Iceland. The methodology is based on mixed-method design, where qualitative focus-group interviews follow quantitative survey data. 

About the doctoral candidate: 

Ívar Rafn Jónsson was born in 1974 in Reykjavik. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Iceland in 1998. In the following years, Ívar worked on various projects related to the treatment of children and adolescents. In 2006, he completed a postgraduate diploma in teaching and a master's degree in teacher studies from the University of Iceland in 2010. Since 2006, Ívar has worked as an upper-secondary school teacher and held the adjunct position at the School of Education since 2018.
