The University of Iceland has established the role of Ombudsman for PhD students. The Ombudsman is an impartial, independent counsel for PhD students who helps them resolve problems that come up in their studies. The Ombudsman informs PhD students of their rights and duties, facilitates their communication with supervisors and doctoral committees, and helps them navigate the rules and procedures of PhD studies.
All issues brought to Ombudsman are confidential and the PhD student decides whether the issue will be brought to the attention of other parties at the university.
If a PhD student requests a meeting with Ombudsman a neutral meeting place will be found in concert with the student.
Sveinn Guðmundsson serves as Ombudsman. He received a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Iceland in 2017 and works as Equality Officer and sessional teacher at the School of Social Sciences.
The Ombudsman can be contacted through the email umbodsmadur@hi.is and by the direct phone line 525-4193. All issues will be confidential.
Further information can be found at the Ombudsman webpage.
