Record number of graduates from the University of Iceland
Over 2,500 candidates receive their diplomas in both undergraduate- and graduate studies from the University of Iceland on Saturday 19 June, a record number. Like last year the organisation of the ceremonies will differ due to restrictions on gatherings.
There will be two graduation ceremonies and this year they take place in Frjálsíþróttahöllin in Laugardalur (the new Laugardalshöll). Only candidates who are receiving their diplomas can attend the ceremonies. However, there will be live streaming for families and friends online.

In the first stage of the Graduation Ceremony, which starts at 10 am, undergraduate and postgraduate candidates from the Schools of Engineering and Natural Sciences and and Social Sciences will receive their degree certificates. The total number of graduates from the School of Social Sciences is 736 and 287 from the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences.
The second stage starts at 1.30 P.M. for candidates graduating from undergraduate and graduate studies from the Schools of Health Sciences, Humanities and Education. The total number of graduates from the School of Health Sciences is 671, 298 from the School of Humanities, and 556 from the School of Education.
The total number of graduating students from undergraduate studies is 1,621 and 927 from graduate studies. The total number of graduating students from the University of Iceland tomorrow is thus 2,548; a record number by far in a single graduation. To compare the total number of graduates was 2,050 last year. Among the graduates are the first ones receiving their master’s degree in industrial biotechnology, offered by the University of Iceland in collaboration with the biopharmaceutical company Alvotech. Furthermore, the first student in Biostatistics completes a master’s degree; another first is a graduate with a Master in Epidemiology, and finally the first students in applied archival studies receive their postgraduate diploma on Saturday.
The rector of the University of Iceland will address the ceremony as well as Ingvar Þóroddsson, BS in electrical and computer engineering, and Valdís Huld Jónsdóttir, MS in industrial biotechnology on behalf of the graduates. The Icelandic musician Bríet will perform at the first ceremony with Ruben Pollock and Jónas Sigurðsson with Ómar Guðjónsson at the second one.
The graduates from the University of Iceland in February were 467 in total making the total number this year of graduating students from the University of Iceland 3,015.
Students due to graduate have received a letter with further details on the organisation of the ceremony; but special emphasis is placed on health and safety at the Graduation Ceremonies with regard to infection prevention. Laugardalshöll will be divided into two areas in accordance with governmental restrictions, and University staff will be on site to assist and guide candidates on seating arrangements.
