New strategic plan being drafted

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland, sent the following message to University staff and students today (12 March 2021):

"Dear students and colleagues, 

We are always aiming to make a good university better, to ensure we are best placed to have a positive impact on society, our environment and ecosystems. Work has been taking place on developing the new strategy of the University of Iceland for 2021-2026 and a draft will be presented shortly. We have placed significant emphasis on shaping the new strategy with input from the entire University community, as well as our partners in the public and private sectors. The draft strategy will soon be uploaded to the consultation portal for feedback and I would like to encourage you all to take this opportunity to make your influence felt as far as possible. The plan is to finalise the new strategy at the University Forum and the University Council in June.

The University of Iceland promotes innovation in all fields and makes particular efforts to cultivate links between higher education and industry. Today marks the end of the University of Iceland innovation accelerator for women under the banner of the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE), which was held in collaboration with the US Embassy in Iceland. The goal was to support women to develop their companies and business ideas and increase female representation within the entrepreneurial and innovation sector. Special awards will be presented at a formal ceremony in the Aula this afternoon for the three best business plans developed during the innovation accelerator.

The University of Iceland strives to guarantee high quality degree programmes at all levels of study, since a degree grants access to graduate studies and jobs all over the world. I would like to encourage those of you coming to the end of your undergraduate degree to explore the diverse range of graduate programmes we offer. For the first time, it is now possible to check undergraduate programme pages to explore opportunities for graduate studies after you complete your degree. 

Unfortunately, this week the first domestic COVID-19 infections for a long time were diagnosed, impressing upon us all the importance of continued caution regarding infection control. With solidarity, we will get through this.

The earthquakes on Reykjanes peninsula continue and most of us have been following our scientists' vital analysis of the situation and changes in the Earth's crust. It is natural to feel anxious in reaction to powerful earthquakes and the consequent uncertainty. We must support one another as best we can through this unpredictable time.

This week we were also reminded that, despite the crocuses heralding the arrival of spring, there is always a chance of wintry weather at this time of year. The ancient month of Harpa and the first official day of summer is still a way off, though spring draws closer with every day. Exams are also drawing closer and we all know that sustained diligence and thorough preparation are the key to success.
