Featured on nine lists of the best universities in the world
The University of Iceland features on nine of Times Higher Education’s lists over the best universities in the world in distinct subjects. This is the highest number of rankings the University has achieved. This is the first time the University is ranked on the list of the world’s best universities in the fields of business and economics.
The University of Iceland has since 2011 featured on the Times Higher Education rankings for the best universities in the world, or ten years in a row. The magazine has in recent years also published rankings for the best universities in subject fields, and in this area the University of Iceland has been working its way up year by year. The University made three lists three years ago, but has now reached nine of them, according to the rankings published this morning by Times Higher Education.
According to the new rankings the University of Iceland is:
- 151-175 in life sciences
- 201-250 in physical sciences
- 201-250 in engineering and technology
- 251-300 in social science
- 251-300 in humanities
- 251-300 in psychology
- 401-500 in clinical, pre-clinical and health
- 401-500 in business and economics
The Times Higher Education's evaluation for the rankings is based on thirteen indicators, covering research activity, international impact in science, quality of teaching, educational facilities, and international connections. Variations in research and publishing culture in different disciplines is taken into account.
The position of the University of Icleand in the rankings show the overall strength the university has achieved internationally in recent years, a success that has been the base for various opportunities for collaboration with international universities; both in research and in exchanges of students and staff.

The strength of the university is further confirmed in its position on Shanghai rankings, where the university is at 501-600 according to ShanghaiRankingConsultancy, published this summer. ShanghaiRanking’s lists for subjects place the University of Iceland at number six in the world in the field of remote sensing, where digital photos form aeroplanes and satellites are processed to produce data about the Earth’s surface. The university is at number 40 in electric and computer engineering, among the top 150 in earth sciences and nursing, 151-200 in biological sciences, 2-300 in geography, human biology, political science and tourist studies, and at 301-400 in the fields of climate science, public health and clinical medicine. Furthermore, the university is among the top 500 in ecology and economics.
The University of Iceland is the only Icelandic university to make these two most prestigious rankings of universities in the world.
