Jón Atli Benediktsson, rector of the University of Iceland sent the following announcement to students and staff today:
"Dear students and colleagues.
Soon it is time for teaching to start again after the summer holidays, which I sincerely hope has proved enjoyable for everyone. In light of the serious situation regarding the spread of COVID-19, the University of Iceland has the safety of everyone, inside and outside the university, as its first priority. The teaching arrangements for the autumn semester will thus aim to ensure the well-being of students and staff:
• The restrictions based on the recommendations of the Chief Epidemiologist will be followed in all respects.
• A decision on the organization of teaching in the autumn semester will be announced in the next few days, but given the current situation, it looks like we will have to rely on online teaching to a great extent.
• Special efforts will be made to welcome new students.
• The University's buildings will remain open to students and staff with certain restrictions.
• Efforts will be made to utilize the University's buildings for on-site study as far as possible.
The current restrictions based on the recommendations of the Chief Epidemiologist are valid until August 13. and I urge all of you to get acquainted with them thoroughly and strictly follow them.
The restrictions stipulate that no more than 100 adults may gather in the same space and there must be at least two meters (2m) between individuals. A face mask must be worn if this is not possible.
Many people are looking forward to starting a new school year and we will certainly do everything in our power to ensure that everyone experiences the unique spirit of studying and working at the University of Iceland.
Best regards,
Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector"
