Construction begins for the extension of Gamli Garður

Construction work is now beginning on the expansion of Gamli Garður, with plans to add two three-storey extensions to the student hall of residence. The work should be complete by autumn 2021.

When designing the new structures, emphasis was placed on staying in keeping with nearby University of Iceland buildings, Gamli Garður, the National Museum and the appearance of Hringbraut.

The construction for the extension of Gamli Garður will have an impact on pedestrians and cyclists around the site and will also affect car parking. All possible efforts will be made to ensure that the works inconvenience students, staff and campus visitors as little as possible. Excavation, concrete works and general building works are likely to cause the most disruption, but will be confined to weekdays between 8 am and 6 pm.

There are plans to fence off around 60 parking spaces at the north end of the gravel car park on Sæmundargata for the contractors' use. Drivers are reminded that there is another gravel car park further south on the University campus, between the Alvogen building and the new Stúdentagarður hall of residence at Sæmundargata 21. There are plans to increase the number of parking spaces at the contractors' current work site once that project is completed in February.

Further information on the site and the building works can be found on the University website (in Icelandic) https://www.hi.is/haskolinn/gamli_gardur
