Academic calendar
At the University of Iceland, the academic year commences 1 July and is divided into two teaching semesters; autumn semester from 20 August to 18 December and spring semester from 4 January to 10 May. Instruction in the autumn commences at the end of August or beginning of September. The instruction and examination dates may vary slightly between individual schools/faculties. In the School of Humanities, where the Viking and Medieval Norse Studies Programme is based, instruction usually begins around 1 September.

Credit System
The credit system at the University of Iceland is the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System or ECTS. Full-time studies for one academic year count as 60 ECTS credits, 30 ECTS credits each semester.
The programmes leading to BA and BS degrees total 180 credits (3 years) in most instances. The Viking and Medieval Norse Studies Programme is a two-year 120 ECTS credit programme leading to a MA degree.
Even though full-time studies amount to 30 credits per semester, a student is permitted to register for up to 40 credits per semester. A student who wishes to register for more than 40 credits in a semester, shall submit a reasoned request to the respective faculty.
