New edX course on gendered perspective in culture and society
The registration is currently open for the University of Iceland's fifth on-line course within the edX network, Gender and Intersectionality which begins 11 May. Gender intersects with everything and this course will teach participants how to analyse religious texts and traditions, class divisions, racial inequality, sexualities and nationalism through a gendered lens. The course is, furthermore, part of the Gender Equality Studies and Training Programme (GRÓ-GEST) operated by the University of Iceland's School of Humanities under the auspices of UNESCO.
EdX is a leading international on-line learning platform founded by Harvard and MIT of which the University of Iceland has been a partner since 2017. By joining the University of Iceland wants to increase access to dynamic and exciting study programmes, promote the University's work on an international level, and further develop teaching methods in line with rapidly changing technologies and society.
Gender and Intersectionality is the latest University of Iceland international on-line course within the edX platform and is in the field of gender studies. Understanding how gender intersects with various cultural and social concepts is not only essential to understanding gender studies as a scientific discipline, it is also an important part of moving through and experiencing the world as a human being. Understanding gender and intersectionality can help us understand ourselves and the world and culture we live in. This course offers an excellent starting point for anyone coming to gender studies for the first time, or for those already in the field who wish to brush up on the basics through a more visual experience. The course will offer different resources in the form of literature, articles, images, audio, websites, and visual texts about gender in many different contexts. Specifically using examples from popular culture, classical literature, and history, this course will teach you how to analyse religious texts and traditions, class divisions, racial inequality, sexualities, and nationalism.
The teaching staff in this course is Giti Chandra, author and senior researcher and Thomas Brorsen Smidt, project and research manager, both work for the Gender Equality Studies and Training Programme (GRÓ-GEST).
