Culture and mentality matter

“The project aims at finding out what gives Nordic nations a high quality of life compared with other nations; where they are strong and where they are weak. This will make it easier to find ways to get even better results “, says Stefán Ólafsson, Professor of Sociology. He has been working on an extensive study where quality of life in 29 nations is compared. An extensive data-base has been created to achieve a more multi-faceted measurement of quality of life than has been hitherto achieved. Ólafsson says that the study is based on a similar methodology as the annual United Nations’ quality of life measurement; except that in the UN measurement four variables are measured, but in his study the variables are sixty-nine.

Reading Queer Histories in the Present

18. October 2022 - 13:00 to 14:30

The National Museum, Suðurgata 41

How can we read, write, and rework queer history? In this talk, Sam Holmqvist will present some findings from their work on gender transgressions and cross-dressings of the 19th century. How can we read such histories in the present? Can we understand lived experiences of transgressing the boundaries of sex and gender in terms of a transgender history? Holmqvist will also present Queerlit, a digital catalogue of Swedish LGBTQI fiction. Aiming to increase the searchability of LGBTQI themes in fiction, Queerlit is meant to enable overviews over time. But is there really a queer history that rune stones and contemporary audiobooks have in common? And if so, how are we meant to present such histories both accurately and comprehensibly?
