University of Iceland Data Protection Policy 

1. General information on the University of Iceland Data Protection Policy 

On 15 July 2018, the Act on Data Protection and the Processing of Personal Data no. 90/2018 entered into force (the Data Protection Act). In accordance with the provisions of the law, the University of Iceland has established the following policy for data protection and the processing of personal data. Personal data is information that identifies a particular individual or could be used for this purpose. 

Staff at the University of Iceland shall keep the Data Protection Policy in mind at all times when working with personal data. Steps shall be taken to ensure that all personal data gathered, used or processed at the University of Iceland is handled in accordance with the new law.  

Open Access Policy

Discussed at the 10th University Forum, 19 April 2013, and approved by the University Council 6 February 2014.

The University of Iceland considers it important that as many people as possible can benefit from the results of the research work conducted within the university. The University therefore encourages staff to publish articles in open access outlets, such as open access journals, archives, preprint databases, etc. The University of Iceland open access policy does not apply to books or book chapters.

Approved by the University General Forum 12 November 2004.

Policy amended 18 October 2018 and 7 February 2019.

Environmental Policy for Operations

The Environmental Policy for Operations is written in accordance with law no. 70/2012 law on climate (icelandic: lög um loftslagsmál) and adheres to other laws and regulations on environmental issues with regards to operations.

This policy was approved by the University Council on the 8th of December, 2022.

A new UI policy set in widespread collaboration

A large group of people within and outside of the University community is currently working on setting a comprehensive policy for the University of Iceland for 2016-2021. Great emphasis is placed on a democratic process and widespread collaboration in the policy-making, scheduled to be completed in the first half of next year.

The oral defence takes place Thursday, October 12, at 1:00 pm in the Aula in the main building of the University of Iceland as well as in live stream.
