Status of doctoral students Doctoral students with an employment contract at the University of Iceland (on the basis of a grant, for instance) have the status of employees and therefore enjoy the collectively agreed rights that pertain to such employment. Besides these rights, PhD students who are employees have the right to subsidised food, a commuting grant and the use of a computer. The grant amount is 10,000 USD irrespective of the length of the grant. Only Icelandic citizens who are not Green Card holders or American citizens are eligible.
