PhD student status and funding

Status of doctoral students

Doctoral students with an employment contract at the University of Iceland (on the basis of a grant, for instance) have the status of employees and therefore enjoy the collectively agreed rights that pertain to such employment. Besides these rights, PhD students who are employees have the right to subsidised food, a commuting grant and the use of a computer.

Research grants for doctoral students

The University of Iceland has in recent years increased the number of grants for PhD students, given that robust financing allows PhD students to dedicate themselves to their studies full time and complete their degree.
