In this open lecture dr. Emília Malcata Rebelo, Professor in Planning Studies, presents an illustrative case study from the city of Porto. Rebelo is Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of Porto University, in the Planning and Territorial Development Division. Abstract:
Growing real estate, financial and tourist pressure is being exerted on historic city centres, which are becoming increasingly attractive to global investors. This case study shows how planning instruments, strategic guidelines and governance policies, collaborative practices between the public and private sectors and contextual factors make it possible to achieve the community's economic and socio-cultural objectives, especially among the most disadvantaged. It also shows, from a planning perspective, the possibilities of managing these tensions between property, tourism and financial interests, thus reconciling them with the interests of the resident population.
