The American Nobel laureate and economist Joseph Stiglitz will give a talk at Veröld - The House of Vigdís, University of Iceland, on 1 March 1st from 12 - 1.30 pm. His talk is entitled Freedom and Liberty: Perspectives from the 21st Century Economics. The symposium is organized by the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Culture and Business Affairs in collaboration with the University of Iceland and will also be streamed.

Joe Stiglitz is well known in Iceland. He received the Nobel Prize in economics in 2001. Stiglitz has been a professor of economics for a long time at various prestigious American universities. At one point, he served as one of the economic advisors to President Clinton and was also the chief economist of the World Bank for a period.

Stiglitz is currently a professor at Columbia University in New York. He has previously given lectures in Iceland, including at a conference of Icelandic authorities and the International Monetary Fund in 2011. He was also commissioned around the turn of the century to conduct an assessment of the Icelandic economy. In 2001, the Central Bank of Iceland published his research paper in English in the bank's series, Central Bank of Iceland Working Papers.

Jón Atli Benediktsson, Rector of the University of Iceland will chair and open the symposium. The agenda is as follows:

  • Katrín Jakobsdóttir, Prime Minister gives the opening talk.
  • Joe Stiglitz, Professor Columbia University, gives his talk The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society.
  • Jón Atli Benediktsson, the rector of the University of Iceland, will moderate the discussions, and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions.
  • Lilja D. Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Culture and Business Affairs, will conclude the symposium with a summary of its content.

Light refreshments will be provided by the University of Iceland at the end of the symposium.

The symposium is open to all, space permitting and will be conducted in English.
