Announcement from the Rector to University staff and students on 27 March:
„Dear students and staff,
As we come to the end of another week, at the forefront of my mind is a huge amount of gratitude to you all. You have show extraordinary tenacity and understanding, as well as performing Herculean feats in keeping the University going in these unprecedented times.
In the eye of the storm, we see students and staff lending their services in the struggle against the disease that now threatens humans across the globe. Our scientists are working closely with Landspítali University Hospital and the authorities on various projects in response to the epidemic. For example, in collaboration with others they have created a prediction model for the development of COVID-19 here in Iceland. University students are assisting the contact tracing team at the Department of Civil Protection. The Web of Science has compiled all relevant material on viruses. A PhD student in psychology has translated and adapted educational material on the disease for children. Our staff are organising online EduCamps and have created a website with material to support parents and those working in schools and after school centres. This is just a snapshot. With knowledge and teamwork, we will defeat this disease and stop the spread of infections.
Now the weekend is almost here and many of us will be able to relax with our loved ones. Nevertheless, many will still be hard at work and some are dealing with anxiety. It is important to ask for support, as well as supporting those who are closest to you. We must look out for one another and remember that our mental wellbeing is essential if we are to weather this storm. Let us also not forget that these times will pass.
We must stand united and together we will prevail.
Best regards,
Jón Atli Benediktsson
Rector of the University of Iceland“
