Routledge publishes a book on the Mass Protest in Iceland

""

The book Economic Crisis and Mass Protest: The Pots and Pans Revolution by Jón Gunnar Bernburg, Professor of Sociology at the University of Iceland's School of Social Sciences. The book is published by Routledge (Taylor & Francis) one of the world's leading academic publisher in the Humanities and Social Sciences.

The publication is the result of three years of research activity on the economic crisis in Iceland and the so-called Pots and Pans Revolution. The volume focuses on why the financial crisis in Iceland triggered mass protests that escalated into the Pots and Pans Revolution in January 2009. This is a case study where diverse methods were used to examine events and participants.

The methods used included interviews with protesters; surveys on participation among the public, and the rhetoric surrounding the events was analysed. Furthermore, police data on the demonstrations were examined. In conclusion, the author puts the protests in Iceland in context with mass protests that have occurred all over the world in recent years in the wake of the financial crisis.

The following book review is published on the back cover:

„In the global wave of protest against austerity policies during the Great Recession, Iceland played a pivotal role as the early riser . . . Based on in-depth empirical analysis and innovative theoretical thinking, this volume offers a most welcome analysis of the mechanisms through which citizens mobilize under critical circumstances as collective actions create solidarity and feelings of empowerment.“
