The University of Iceland is ranked in 401st to 500th place by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy on their list of the world's best universities published last week. The University of Iceland is the only Icelandic university that made the list.

ShanghaiRanking Consultancy published an evaluation of the best universities worldwide in 54 academic subjects earlier this summer, as per our news article last week, where the University of Iceland is ranked in sixth place worldwide in the field of remote sensing. The University is, furthermore, ranked among the hundred best in earth sciences, and in position 100 - 150 in nursing.

The list published last week by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy is based on the overall strength of universities and comprises natural sciences, bioscience, medical science, and social sciences. The assessment is based on six objective indicators, including the number of articles published in renowned scientific journals; the number of times research conducted at the university has been cited by other research scientists; the university's performance based on the number of employees, and the number of employees receiving scientific awards for their contributions to individual fields of study. The ShanghaiRanking Consultancy evaluated 1,000 universities this year, and the University of Iceland is ranked in 401-500 place.

The University of Iceland made the Shanghai list or Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) for the first time in 2017, which is one of two highly prestigious and influential rankings regarding the world's best academic institutions. The other is Times Higher Education World University Rankings on which the University of Iceland has ranked annually since 2011. The University of Iceland is the only Icelandic university that has made both of these lists.

According to the new list from ShanghaiRankings, Harvard University in the United States is the best university in the world for the 17th year running. American and British universities are ranked in most of the top 20 places, but the University of Copenhagen is in 26th place, highest of all the Nordic universities.
