The Steingrímur Arason Fund is accepting applications for grants. The goal of the fund is to support development of expert knowledge in education and pedagogy.
Applications will be accepted until 1 September, 2019.
The grant will be awarded to a specialist or graduate student studying education and pedagogy. The grant can also be used for educational exchange.
The successful application will focus on
a) research that involves innovative knowledge in the field
b) development projects that connect theory and practice in the field
c) foreign exchange programmes in education and pedagogy.
The fund will award a total of 1,000,000 ISK in 2019.
All applications must include the following:
- The applicant’s name, social security number, address, phone number, and actual email address,
- The most applicable highlights from the applicant’s educational and work background,
- The title of the project and its aims and scientific merit,
- A concise description of the project of no more than 150 words to be used for general promotion and presentations about the project if it is funded,
- A detailed description of the project of no more than one page. The description must include the project goals and how they will be implemented along with assessment of outcomes. The description must also include information about how the project will further the goals of the fund,
- A work timeline and budget for the project,
- If the application is for a research project, it must include a description of the main elements of the research,
- A list of collaborators if appropriated,
- A description of how the money will be used if the application is funded,
- Information about other funding for the project,
- The names, phone numbers and email addresses of possible references.
The application shall be no more than three pages, not including attachments. All applications will be kept confidential. The board of directors of the foundation reserves the right to award more than one application with a grant, reject all applications and/or award grants by other means. The emphasis is on the quality of academic work in the application. Funded projects will have to submit a report with the main results and outcomes of the project upon completion.
The results of the application process are planned to be announced at a ceremony in October, 2019.

About the fund
The Steingrímur Arason Fund was formerly known as the Columbia Fund, which was founded with money given by Steingrímur Arason in 1939. Steingrímur (1879-1951) completed his teaching degree at Flensborgarskóli in 1908. He studied human development and pedagogy at the Teachers College at Columbia University in the United States from 1915-1920, the first Icelander to do so. He taught children and adolescents in Eyjafjörður and Reykjavík, but his main teaching was at the Teachers College in Reykjavík where he taught for 20 years.
