Grants for PhD students at the School of Education

The Þuríður J. Kristjánsdóttir Scholarship and Research Fund calls for applications. The purpose of the Fund is to provide grants to PhD students at the School of Education, especially to fund pedagogical research. Grants may be used to fund conference trips, courses, international collaboration, research equipment, payroll expenses and research expenses. 

The total sum of allocated grants is up to ISK 1,000,000.

The application deadline is 15 March 2020.

Grant applications must include the following details: 

  • Applicant's name, ID number, address, telephone number and valid email address.
  • Main points from the applicant's CV and the bibliographies of the applicant/supervisor over the past 5 years.
  • Title of the research project, aims and scientific value.
  • Concise description of the project, max. 150 words, which will be used in general publicity if the application is successful.
  • A more detailed description of the research project, max. one page, discussing the aims of the project, how it will expand current knowledge in the field of research, and how it supports the goals of the Fund.
  • A research plan, detailing e.g. the schedule, the budget, and the main collaborating partners on the project.
  • Other financial support.
  • Names, telephone numbers and email addresses of those who can provide references.

The maximum length of the application is three pages, not including accompanying documents.  All applications are treated as confidential. The board of the Fund reserves the right to award grants to more than one applicant, to reject all applicants and/or allocate grants in another way. 

Emphasis is placed on robust academic applications. The grant recipient shall submit a report to the Fund on the main findings and successes of the project after it ends. 
Grants will be allocated in a formal ceremony on 1 April 2020 at the Spring seminar of the School of Education and the City of Reykjavík.

About the Þuríður J. Kristjánsdóttir Scholarship and Research Fund

The Fund was established under the umbrella of the University of Iceland Scholarship Funds in 2019. The endowment capital was donated by Þuríður Jóhanna Kristjánsdóttir, a former professor and pro-rector at the Iceland University of Education, who passed away in 2018. In her will, she left her house and other property to the University of Iceland, for the purpose of establishing a scholarship fund.
 
Þuríður Jóhanna Kristjánsdóttir was born at Steinar in Stafholtstungur, Borgarfjörður on 28 April 1927. She qualified as a teacher from the Iceland University of Education in 1948, going on to study at the Copenhagen College of Teacher Training and the University of Cambridge. She completed a BS from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1968, a Master's degree in 1969 and a PhD in educational psychology from the same university in 1971. She began work at the Iceland University of Education in 1971 and became the institution's first professor in 1973. She held the position of pro-rector at the Iceland University of Education from 1983 to 1987. Þuríður retired in 1989.
