From managing international projects to studying international business in Iceland
Studying International Business and Project Management at a graduate level became possible at the University of Iceland last year for the first time. As the first group of students’ was approaching their half-way in their study journey, we asked one of our dear students, Elif Yaman to reflect on her time in Iceland so far, her studies, and her advice to future students who are thinking about applying to this programme. The next deadline is coming up on February 1st.
What is your background and what are you studying?
I'm Elif, and I'm originally from Istanbul, Turkey. I am enrolled in the MA in international business and project management at the University of Iceland. Along with my studies, I work as an assistant to one of my lecturers and as a social worker in Reykjavík helping children with special needs. My previous roles at international firms involved managing brands, developing digital content, and improving customer experiences across a variety of projects, so I decided to concentrate on project management in my career.
What made you choose the University of Iceland and what made you want to come to Iceland for your studies?
I wanted to study in a country where I could improve myself while being surrounded by nature, and Iceland fitted the bill. I was attracted by Iceland's reputation as one of the safest and most peaceful countries, as well as its high living standards and great education. Moreover, the country's commitment to equal opportunities aligned with my values and encouraged me to help empower disadvantaged people. The main factor in my decision was the University of Iceland’s reputation for research-led teaching methods, modern facilities, and an international outlook.
How has your time here been so far and how are you adapting to living in Iceland?
Although Reykjavík is much smaller than my hometown of Istanbul, its dynamic environment with events such as music festivals, sporting activities, and easy access to nature has captivated me. My time in Iceland has been enriching so far, with experiences such as witnessing volcanic eruptions three times and enjoying the vibrant student life in Reykjavík. I'm striving to make the most of my time here and genuinely happy to be in this environment.

What surprised you the most about coming here?
What surprised me the most were some unusual foods, captivating natural attractions such as volcano explosions and Northern lights, and the people's down-to-earth nature. People have been very friendly, eager to inform me about their country, culture and its history. Observing locals in classes and workplaces wearing slippers and socks to prioritize the outcome above their appearance is unique to me. Constant daylight in summer and long winter nights, on the other hand, was a one-of-a-kind experience as well.
What would you say to anyone considering applying to study international business and project management at UI?
My advice to the prospective students: Don’t hesitate to apply! The international aspect of the programme, with classmates from across the world and group projects, aligns perfectly with the expectations of an international business discipline. The curriculum featured courses such as International Projects, Project Portfolios, Diversity and Inclusion in Organizations, and Agile and Lean methodologies. Additionally, the lecturers' genuine concern for students combined with a balance of theoretical and practical courses enhances the learning experience even more.
