Birgir Hrafnkelsson, Sölvi Rögnvaldsson and Rafael Daníel Vias will give the lecture. Bridging the gap: Bringing Bayesian discharge rating curves into hydrological practice.

In the lecture they will talk about the making of an R-package and a Shiny app for predicting river discharge from water elevation measurements.

Abstract:

At the heart of progress in society is the scientific method and research. Despite technological advances, there persists a gap between discoveries within academia and those that can benefit from them in the real world. In the context of statistical research, fortunately, the advent of open-source software has opened a channel between researchers and practitioners, enabling researchers to share recent developments by writing software packages available for everyone to use. In this talk, we walk through the process, from discovery to delivery, of creating a Bayesian hierarchical model that predicts river discharge from water elevation measurements with a more accurate uncertainty quantification than previous methods. We describe the development of an R package, bdrc, which is now available on CRAN, and the design of a graphical user interface in Shiny, which supports practitioners to take the model into use.
