Application deadlines Master studies For fall semester, International students: February 1st For fall semester, Icelandic and Nordic students: April 15th – We highly recommend that citizens of non-EU countries study the Directorate of Immigration’s rules for student permits right away, since immigration paperwork can take considerable time for an accepted applicant. For spring semester, Icelandic and Nordic students: October 15th Please note it is not probable that citizens outside EEA/EU can begin studies at the University of Iceland in the Spring semester. This is due to the fact that the Directorate of Immigration requires that applications for residence permits are received by the Directorate no later than 1. November, in order to issue permits before the start of Spring semester classes. Incomplete applications will not be processed. Late applications are not accepted. The language of the application and supporting documents is English. Applications please note Citizens of countries outside the EEA/EFTA (with the exception of the Faroe Islands and Greenland), applying for studies at the University of Iceland, are required to pay a fee of ISK 8,000 for the handling and processing of their applications. The fee is charged as part of the online application process, and is payable by credit card (VISA or Mastercard) only. The handling and processing fee is NOT refundable. The handling and processing fee for applications from citizens of countries outside EEA/EFTA (with the exception of the Faroe Islands and Greenland) is charged as authorized by Item g of Art. 24. of the Public Higher Education Institutions Act, no. 85/2008 (amended 1 July 2013). As determined by the University Council on 6 March 2014, the fee is included in the University's Tariff for various services to students etc. The fee will be charged for applications pertaining to the academic year 2014-2015 and later. Registration fee The annual registration fee for the University of Iceland is ISK 75,000. The spring semester registration fee for new students is ISK 55,000. Apply online ONLINE APPLICATION FORM Online application form The University Online Application System gives each applicant an ID number that can be used to monitor the status of the application at https://english.hi.is/university/information_for_applicants. User interfaces in Icelandic or English are available. If the ID number is lost please contact student registration admisson@hi.is On the online application form, you will be required to provide the following details: Program selection: from a drop-down menu of graduate programs selected Personal information including a scan (PDF file) of your passport. Previous education: degrees awarded with dates and subject(s). References: provide names, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses of two referees. Referees should write one letter of recommendation. Please ask your referees to send their letters of recommendation directly to the University of Iceland. Supporting documents to be uploaded: – curriculum vitae (CV) (see below) – statement of purpose (see below) – scanned transcripts (see below) – Copy of grant or scholarship application and/or confirmation, if applicable. Please ensure that all requested supporting documents are submitted no later than two weeks after the application deadline. Applicants for master program in biology are required to find a departmental coordinator/supervisor, and have an idea for a research project before applying. Applicants are advised to contact the teachers in the field they are interested in. Please specify name and email of potential supervisor in statement of purpose. Applicants for the Master program at the Faculty of Physical Sciences will not be accepted until a departmental coordinator/supervisor has been assigned for the applicant. State the reasons why you want to pursue graduate work in the field of xxx, the issues and problems you want to address, and your professional goals. Briefly describe why you choose the University of Iceland. Your statement of purpose, written in English, should be uploaded and submitted as a PDF file together with your online application (see above). Please include your name in the file name along with a descriptive title, for example: Jane_Smith_statement.pdf Transcripts Transcripts: submitted electronically AND in hard copy You are required to submit official transcripts and diploma supplements (if available) bearing the seal of the institution and signature of the registrar or other appropriate official, including an explanation of grading system of University degree/s in English (applicable if a degree is not from an Icelandic university). These transcripts and diploma supplements should be in English. If official records are not available in English, the originals should be accompanied by a certified English translation. Note that a translation cannot be submitted instead of the original records; the original records must be submitted as well. Explanation of grading system of university degree(s) in English. Referee should be from faculty members or others who are familiar with your academic work and qualified to evaluate your potential for graduate study. The letters should be written in English. All letters of recommendation will be treated in confidence by the University of Iceland authorities. The reference letter should be submitted either: (a) preferable electronically by e-mail (PDF file as attachment) to admission@hi.is with graduate program in subject line and name of applicant.
