In addition to the formal requirements in the application form (names, study programs, ages, social security numbers, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses), a concise description of the project of no more than 150 words stating the title, objectives and social value of the project is required. In the more detailed description, applicants will lay out the objectives, implementation, and assessment of the project’s potential benefits for society. This should include ideas for publicizing the project. A schedule and budget should be included as attachments.

1. Each application team shall have a minimum of four students in their bachelor and/or masters studies. Teams from across the faculties of the university or departments in the School of Education are encouraged.
2. Two million isk are allocated from the fund every three years.
3. Granted projects must be implemented in one to three years.
4. Teams can apply for mentorship on specific aspects of the application process. Teams can also be assigned mentors for the implementation process, to work on certain aspects of the idea.
5. The grant is not intended to be used for salaries but to cover various costs associated with the execution and implementation of the project.

Broddflugan points to society’s ills and draws attention to how to heal them by being both critical and helpful. The name is also a fun allusion to the respected scholar and first rector of the Teacher’s College, Dr. Broddi Jóhannesson. Dr. Broddi was one of the most influential educators of the last century in Iceland. He believed that it is important for students to choose their own projects and that the goal of schooling is to provide students and teachers with the opportunity to become independent, creative individuals who are ready to take on the challenges of daily life.
