Public seminar hosted by the Human Rights Institute of the University of Iceland and the Icelandic Red Cross.

„Tolerated Stay“ denotes those who have received a final negative decision in their asylum application in Iceland, however, their situation prevents authorities to send them back to their home country for various reasons.

Through months of research and interviews, the Icelandic Red Cross has written a report bringing to light the frustrated desire for people in Tolerated Stay in Iceland to live a dignified life. This is mainly due to the impossibility of obtaining a permanent kennitala; the difficult -and sometimes impossible- access to a work permit; their children born in Iceland having unrecognized citizenship; their struggle to cover their own basic needs; and their extremely deteriorating well-being. The report is available here, and a summary is available in Icelandic and in English. The Ministry of Justice has published critical comments on the report ,see here.

After a presentation on the findings of the report, there will be a panel discussion and audience Q&A.

Participants:

Karla Isabel Johnson, Project Manager, Icelandic Red Cross, co-author of the report

Jasmina Vajzovic Crnac, Leader of the International Department, City of Reykjavík

Albert Björn Lúðvígsson, Associate, Claudia & Partners Legal Services and sessional teacher at the University of Iceland

Sigrún Ingibjörg Gísladóttir, partner at Réttur, board member of the Human Rights Institute (moderator). Brynhildur Flóvenz, Chair of the board of the Human Rights Institute will chair the meeting.

This event will be held in English, in-person only.
