The American system of higher education is enormously productive and useful, and it‘s a great resource for students, faculty, policy makers, employers, and society. What makes it work is not its substance but its form. The form makes no sense to outsiders but it‘s enormously effective. So we need to avoid the urge to remake it in a more rationalized form.
