Abstract

Software engineers commonly sketch on paper or whiteboards to annotate and model artifacts during the design of complex software projects. This work aims to enable developers to also sketch digitally on the user interface of a software development environment (IDE) in order to express their command intentions, hypothesising that this novel input modality could be useful for more conversational interaction with code, for example in a code review setting.
To this end, we are designing a sketching language and developing sketch input, recognition and interpretation components for a software IDE, with the aim of evaluating the feasibility and efficiency of this input modality.
