Island Autonomies
At this seminar, the focus will be on the conceptualization of autonomous islands. Within the literature there are various definitions on autonomous regions. Authors call these entities sub-national island jurisdictions, self-government systems, territorial autonomies, asymmetrical federal territories, federacies, minority governance systems or even partially independent territories. What is a feasible definition? How can these entities be mapped? A special focus will be on the Nordic autonomous islands: the Faroe Islands, Greenland and the Åland Islands and they will be compared with the Portuguese islands of the Azores and Madeira for illustrative purposes.
Maria Ackrén is Associate Professor in Political Science at the University of Greenland (Illisimatusarfik). She got her PhD in Political Science from Åbo Akademy University in Finland 2009. Her research interests include different categories of federalism, asymmetrical federalism, territorial autonomies of the world, island studies and Arctic relations. She has published books, articles and book chapters within these subjects.
