Images and Representations of Small States in World Politics

The study of visual representations has become a vibrant research agenda in International Relations over the past decade. A central topic of concern is how states use visual means to represent their identity to the rest of the world. A related topic is how visual representations securitize national and other political identities, including religious and gender identities.
In this seminar, Lene Hansen, provides an overview of current Visual IR research with a particular emphasis on the opportunities and challenges small states face. She draws attention to how international politics has been impacted by the ability of citizens to produce and circulate images, thus creating diplomatic crises. She will also point to the particular methodological challenges that visual modes of representation produce, including how to study the way that images “speak”.
