Elevating the Field: Excerpts from The Exhibition and Experience Design Handbook

The event is co-hosted by Museology, University of Iceland and the Design department,  Iceland University of the Arts.

McNeil is a professor of design and directory/chief curator of the UC Davis Design Museum at the University of California, Davis where he teaches the next generation of exhibition design thinkers and practitioners. His professional practice spans more than 30 years as principal with Muniz/McNeil (a multi-disciplinary design and award-winning research practice) as well as senior designer at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. He co-founded Re-envisioning Exhibition Design (2014) and a series of international summits called Chaos at the Museum to advance exhibition and experiential design understanding and create a design-centric forum for debate.  

He has a masters in exhibition design from University for the Arts London and a bachelors in graphic design from Middlesex University. His work has been recognized for design excellence by the Society for Experiential Graphic Design, the University and College Designers Association, and the American Alliance of Museums. He has served on the California Association of Museums Board of Directors, juried international design competitions for the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and is a long-standing member of the Society for Experiential Design's (SEGD) academic task force. 

Topic:

Tim will introduce himself and share an overview of his new book "The Exhibition and Experience Design Handbook," (American Alliance of Museums, 2023). In his talk, he will discuss the methodology that his book charts through reoccurring design conventions or "tropes" that are omnipresent in the exhibition making process.  

His talk will be relevant for designers and museum workers alike. And will even include a connection to Iceland.
