Faculty of Foreign Languages, Literature and Linguistics

The faculty offers diverse academic programmes in Asian studies, Nordic languages, the major European and American languages in addition to classical languages.

Programmes covering the following subjects are offered:

  • Asian studies: Japanese and Chinese
  • Nordic languages: Danish, Norwegian and Swedish
  • Major European and American languages: English, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish
  • Classical languages: Greek and Latin (a key to European culture from the beginnin

The faculty offers various single courses taught in English.

Vigdís FinnbogadóttirThe Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages

The Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages is a research institute working within the Faculty of Humanities. The Institute is a research centre for scholars who teach modern languages and cultures, the classical languages, and translation studies.

Ms. Vigdís Finnbogadóttir has been a powerful spokesperson for the importance of language proficiency, both in one's own native tongue as well as in other languages, and she has made a vital contribution to this field in her career as a teacher, as President of Iceland, and as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations.

Institutes

Research intitutions strengthen the institutional framework for research, coordinate the activities of the different research institutes active within the School, and facilitate research collaboration with scholars and institutes at other universities.
