Among the Research Centre's main goals is increasing knowledge about folklore and culture. The project manager of the Research Centre is folklorist Jón Jónsson. Research The Research Centre is involved in various research and knowledge sharing in the field of folkloristics. Research and education in Icelandic folk beliefs are the main focus and there are several current projects in this field. There is also a study into the practical use of knowledge in folkloristics, looking at the links between academia, the arts, museum work and the tourism industry. Another research area is regional image and the identities of people who live there. The cultural heritage to be found in old photographs is under discussion in an extensive collaborative project related to Strandir, called 'Menningararfur í myndum'. Diaries from the 19th and 20th centuries are also under investigation in another extensive research project.
