I’m a professor of geology at School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland. My research mainly focuses on using tephra layers to decipher eruptive histories and behavior of volcanoes as well as using tephra for dating and correlating geological records. Other research interest is within marine geology, using marine sediments and proxies in these sediments to gather information on past environmental conditions such as, changes in ocean temperature and currents.
Current research projects focus on prehistoric explosive volcanism in Iceland, mainly the frequency and geochemical changes within Icelandic volcanic systems, with a specific emphasis on Hekla and Vatnafjöll systems, as well as projects that center around paleo-oceanic conditions during the last glaciation and interglacial in the Iceland sea.
